Virginia has over 46 local domestic violence programs providing comprehensive domestic violence services to victims of domestic violence. Each program is independently operated to best meet the needs of the community or region in which it operates.

Victims seeking help from one of Virginia’s domestic violence programs can expect to have access to the following services: 24-hour hotline, crisis intervention & safety planning information & referrals, emergency transportation, emergency shelter, counseling
or support, advocacy, legal advocacy and children’s services. Many programs offer a residential shelter for victims and their children. Many programs also offer additional services and outreach to underserved populations.

What Happens When You Call the Statewide Hotline

When you call the Virginia Family Violence and Sexual Assault hotline, a trained professional answers the phone. The hotline is free,
answered 24-hours a day and all calls are kept confidential. The hotline worker will ask about
your safety and will listen to your situation. You have the opportunity to share as much or as
little information about your situation (or your friend’s or family member’s) as you would like.

Hotline workers offer support, information, and referrals to local programs as well as additional resources as appropriate. The call will last as
long as you need it to, and you may call again anytime.
